Instagram has quickly become a staple among social media users. With over 500 million active monthly users and 50% of those users following "brands", leveraging this to your advantage can be key in turning those leads into new patients. While there are some people that utilize the power of Instagram for their medical practice, the majority of physicians and facilities do not. Why is that? [INFOGRAPHIC]

They don’t know how to use Instagram.

That’s it in a nutshell. According to a survey conducted by Manta, 39% of small business owners stated they do not know how to use Instagram and 33% said they do not use social media at all. While it may take a business a little time to adapt to social media, it is crucial to get on the bandwagon, and fast. Social media ad spend is expected to exceed $35 billion in 2017. Click here to read, "The 4 Content Channels Marketers are Adding in 2017."

Truthfully, advertising on social media does take time and dedication to see results, but the effort is worth it. Currently, ad cost is cheap compared to traditional advertising. I suggest you get in the game now and generate a dedicated following before costs increase. Over the next few weeks, we will be rolling out a complete Instagram series that concentrates on creating business accounts, developing advertising, and Instagram practices.

Here are some of the reasons why using Instagram is so important:

Larger network

More people see your posts because others share them. This is a great way to reach an entirely different audience than what you currently have.

Education

Instagram videos are gaining in popularity. You can demonstrate a quick procedure. Instagram recently increased the length of their videos from 15 seconds to a full minute. This increases engagement and keeps people interested in what you have to say. Telling a good story is the best way to engage audiences.

Authenticity

Being authentic on Instagram helps people understand who you are and what your business does. It provides transparency and demonstrates you are human. People want and need to know that you have flaws, make mistakes, and understand what they may be going through. Provide shots of more than just technical items. Show your staff, your patients (with their permission of course), and what goes on throughout the day.

Brand Affiliation

Is there a particular piece of equipment you use that puts you in a class of your own? Demonstrate this on Instagram and then tag the manufacturer. By aligning yourself with brands you use in the office, you are not only building credibility but will bring attention to the manufacturers of products you use. This could be the start of a great relationship where they use you for testimonials or even to try out new equipment before it hits the general market.

How can you start using Instagram for your medical practice?

Hiring an inbound marketer would be a great first step to managing your online advertising and brand presence. If you don’t have the funds to pay someone to do it, take a class or watch YouTube videos on how to build your brand using Instagram. This can help leverage your brand and introduce you to social media if you aren’t already using it.

Look at practices that are successfully using Instagram in your field, and power users in other industries, such as skin care product companies, to see how you can integrate the use of Instagram into your practice. The results will make you snap happy!
